Department Overview


Large Group Sales is responsible for the sales and retention of large group accounts typically with 1,000 or more covered employees. Our large group accounts range from Alabama only accounts to national accounts with employees in all 50 states. The products we sell and service include health, Rx, behavioral health, account-based plans, wellness buy-up’s, reinsurance, dental, vision, and other ancillary products. Our associates are located in all district offices and our headquarters in Riverchase (Birmingham). The daily activities of Large Group Sales includes responding to RFP’s, delivering renewals, monitoring our large accounts’ plan performance, making strategic recommendations to our large accounts regarding their plans, and day-to-day account servicing.


Primary Responsibilities


The incumbent is responsible for assisting the Account Executive and Account Manager with designated Large Group accounts, typically those with 10,000 or more employees, and often are more complex local and national group accounts. This role is intended to add a layer of availability and support. The incumbent is responsible for assisting with strategic account management, including the service effort and assisting the Account Management team in the sales effort as needed to achieve corporate sales goals, as well as the retention of business. The incumbent may, as needed, be responsible for managing the implementation process for designated large accounts.


Summary of Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Must either have or be willing to obtain within 3 months from the date of hire, an Insurance Agent’s License from the State of Alabama Department of Insurance for Life and Disability, including holding and maintaining the license thereafter, as 12 hours of continuing education is required annually to maintain the license
  • 2 years of experience with customer service, claims, benefits administration, and/or marketing communications
  • Willingness to travel both in-state and out-of-state 25% of the time, including overnight travel
  • Experience resolving service issues and maintaining business relationships
  • High degree of specific skills that include communication (verbal and written), organizational, interpersonal, and problem solving
  • Proficiency in various computer applications including, but not limited to Navigator/CIS, GEMS, BOL, CRM, and the RFS System preferred
  • In-depth knowledge of claims processing procedures, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama and standard operation policies as they relate to the management of new and existing groups preferred
  • Experience working with and/or knowledge of benefits and eligibility processes preferred
  • Knowledge of benefits and healthcare trends on both a local and national level preferred
  • Group facing experience preferred
